BMS Buyer's Guide: JK BMS, Daly, JBD & Batrium Compared (UK 2026)

Choosing a BMS is the most consequential decision in a DIY battery build. It's the component that decides whether your £1,000 cell investment lives for a decade or dies in six months. And yet most guides just list specs without telling you which ones actually work.

This page compares every BMS you can realistically buy in the UK right now, from the £25 Daly on AliExpress to the £600 Batrium that monitors 250 cells. Every model here has been tested by real builders (including me) on real packs. I'll tell you which ones I'd trust with my own house and which ones are for tinkering only.

Active vs passive balancing: why this matters more than anything

Every series-connected battery pack develops voltage differences between cells over time. Small differences in capacity, internal resistance, and self-discharge add up. A BMS has to deal with this. There are two approaches:

Passive balancing bleeds energy from the highest cells through a resistor, converting it to heat. It's simple, cheap, and works fine for small, well-matched packs. The problem: the balancing current is tiny. A Daly BMS does about 30mA of balance current. On a 280Ah pack, a 30mA balance current would take literally days to correct a 10% imbalance. It's useless on anything over 100Ah.

Active balancing moves energy from high cells to low cells using inductors or capacitors. The JK BMS does 2A of active balancing. That's 65x what a Daly manages. A 2A balancer can correct a 20Ah imbalance in 10 hours. For salvaged EV cells with inevitable capacity mismatch, active balancing is not a nice-to-have; it's essential.

Prices as of July 2026 from Amazon UK and direct sellers. JK BMS prices fluctuate with AliExpress availability; Amazon UK stock is more expensive but arrives in 2 days and has return protection. Daly and JBD are widely available on both Amazon and eBay. Batrium ships from Australia, expect 2-3 weeks delivery and possible import VAT.

Deep dive: each brand reviewed

JK BMS Best overall

JK BMS is a Chinese manufacturer that's become the default recommendation for serious DIY builders. They launched in 2020 and basically rewrote the expectations for what a sub-£100 BMS should do. The build quality is genuinely good: proper PCB layout, decent MOSFETs, solid solder joints. Not quite automotive grade, but close enough for stationary storage.

What's good: The 2A active balancing is the headline feature and it works as advertised. The Bluetooth app (available on both iOS and Android) is well-designed and gives you per-cell voltage, temperature, current, and historical data. The CAN bus output speaks Pylontech protocol natively, which means it works with Victron, Sunsynk, Solis, and most other inverters without translation hardware. The configurable protection parameters let you set exact voltage cutoffs for any chemistry.

What's not: The app occasionally disconnects and needs a restart. The default balance start voltage on some firmware versions is too high for LiFePO4 (triggers at 3.45V which is already near full). You need to configure this manually. The CAN bus add-on module is a separate purchase and the wiring is not well documented. Documentation in general is poor; you'll be relying on forum posts and YouTube teardowns.

Verdict: For anything 48V and above, the JK B2A24S20P is the one to buy. It's not perfect, but it's £100 and nothing else at twice the price comes close. For 12V/24V builds, the JK B2A8S20P is similarly dominant.

Daly BMS Budget

Daly is the default cheap BMS. They've been around since the early days of DIY lithium and have sold millions of units. The hardware is basic but functional: a PCB with MOSFET switching and resistor-based passive balancing. They're available in every conceivable configuration from 3S to 32S, at prices from £20 to £150.

What's good: Cheap. Widely available on Amazon UK with next-day delivery. The basic protection functions (over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, short circuit) work reliably. For a simple 12V campervan leisure battery or a shed battery that cycles once a week, they're fine.

What's not: The 30mA passive balancing is a joke on any pack over 50Ah. The Bluetooth module (a separate dongle) is slow and loses connection frequently. The CAN bus implementation on the 16S models is unreliable; multiple builders report the BMS dropping off the CAN network or sending garbage data to the inverter. The app hasn't been meaningfully updated in years. There are counterfeit Dalys on the market with undersized MOSFETs that fail at half the rated current. Buy from a UK seller with returns, not AliExpress.

Verdict: Acceptable for cheap 12V builds or backup systems that rarely cycle. Do not use on a daily-cycling home powerwall unless you're on an extremely tight budget and accept the limitations. For the extra £40, the JK BMS is a dramatically better product.

JBD / Overkill Solar BMS

JBD (Jiabaida) manufactures the BMS units sold by Overkill Solar in the US. In the UK, you buy them direct from JBD on AliExpress or through resellers on eBay. They occupy the middle ground between Daly and JK: better build quality than Daly, better documentation, but still passive balancing.

What's good: The build quality is a clear step up from Daly. The Xiaoxiang BMS app (the standard app for JBD units) is well-maintained and gives good data visibility. They support both LiFePO4 and Li-ion chemistry with configurable parameters. The UART port lets you connect a PC for firmware updates and data logging, which neither Daly nor JK offer natively. The MOSFETs are rated honestly; a 200A JBD will actually handle 200A.

What's not: Still passive balancing only. At 60mA it's better than Daly but still inadequate for large packs. No CAN bus on most models (some 16S versions have RS485 which can be adapted). The 4S and 8S models are harder to find on Amazon UK with fast delivery.

Verdict: If you're building a 12V or 24V pack and want better quality than Daly but can't stretch to JK, JBD is a solid middle choice. For 48V builds, the lack of active balancing and CAN bus makes it hard to recommend over the JK at similar money.

Batrium Watchmon4 Premium

Batrium is an Australian company that makes the only BMS I'd describe as genuinely professional-grade for DIY builders. The Watchmon4 is a modular system: a core controller that communicates with per-cell monitoring boards (BlockMons) via a proprietary data bus. It uses external contactors for charge and discharge control rather than MOSFETs, which means it can handle arbitrarily large currents.

What's good: Monitors up to 250 cells. The per-cell BlockMons give you individual cell data that no other DIY BMS can match. The web-based interface is excellent. CAN bus, Modbus TCP, and MQTT outputs mean it integrates with anything. The external contactor design means no MOSFET catastrophic failure mode. If a contactor welds, you replace it; if a MOSFET bank fails shorted, your battery has no protection.

What's not: Price. A full Watchmon4 system for a 16S pack runs £350-600 depending on options, plus the cost of contactors (£50-100 each for a quality Tyco or Gigavac unit). Delivery from Australia takes weeks and you may get stung for import VAT. Setup is significantly more complex than a JK BMS. This is overkill for anything but a whole-house critical system or a very large pack.

Verdict: Buy this if you're building a 30kWh+ home backup system and want per-cell monitoring with industrial-grade reliability. For the typical 5-15kWh DIY powerwall, it's hard to justify 3-4x the cost of a JK BMS that does 90% of the same job.

Which BMS for your build?

Skip the analysis paralysis. Here's the TL;DR based on what you're actually building:

What's the difference between active and passive balancing?

Passive balancing bleeds energy from the highest-voltage cells as heat through a resistor. Active balancing moves energy from high-voltage cells to low-voltage cells using inductors or capacitors. Passive balancing is simpler and cheaper but wastes energy and is limited to tiny balancing currents (30-200mA). Active balancing can move amps between cells and is essential for large capacity packs or salvaged cells with capacity mismatch.

Which BMS for a campervan leisure battery?

For a 4S 12V LiFePO4 campervan battery (100-300Ah), the JK BMS B2A8S20P is the best pick. It handles 200A continuous discharge (enough for a 2000W inverter), has 2A active balancing, Bluetooth monitoring, and costs £55-70. The Daly 4S 200A is a cheaper alternative at £25-35 but uses passive balancing and has no CAN bus.

Can I use a Daly BMS for a 48V home powerwall?

You can, but I don't recommend it for anything you depend on. The Daly 16S hardware is adequate for basic protection, but their passive balancing at 30mA is useless on a 200Ah+ pack, their CAN bus implementation is unreliable, and their Bluetooth app is frustrating. For a home powerwall that you'll rely on daily, spend the extra £40 on a JK BMS. If you're building a backup system that mostly sits idle, Daly is acceptable.

What's the best BMS for Li-ion (NMC) EV cells?

For salvaged EV cells (BMW i3, Nissan Leaf, Tesla), the JK BMS B2A24S20P is the clear winner. Active balancing is essential for used cells with varying degradation, the 24S support handles 14S NMC and 16S LiFePO4, and the CAN bus output integrates with Victron and Sunsynk inverters. The JK's configurable voltage parameters mean you can set the tighter voltage windows that NMC chemistry requires.

Do I need CAN bus on my BMS?

It depends on your inverter. If you're using a Victron Cerbo GX, Sunsynk, or Solis inverter that supports closed-loop battery communication, CAN bus lets the BMS tell the inverter exactly what charge current and voltage to use based on real cell conditions. This is safer and more efficient than voltage-based control. If you're running a basic inverter-charger or using lead-acid mode, you don't need CAN bus; Bluetooth for monitoring and parameter setting is sufficient.

Why does the JK BMS cost more on Amazon than AliExpress?

Amazon UK sellers import JK BMS units in bulk and mark up for UK stock, VAT, next-day delivery, and Amazon's 30-day return policy. AliExpress prices are lower (£45-60 for the B2A24S20P) but you wait 2-3 weeks, there's no meaningful warranty support, and returns are impractical. For a £40 saving on a £100 component for a £1,500 build, I buy from Amazon. If you're ordering cells from China anyway, adding a JK BMS to the same order from a reputable AliExpress seller (JK BMS Official Store) is reasonable.

Can I run multiple BMS units on the same battery?

Not on the same series string; one BMS per string. If you have parallel strings (common with 2P16S LiFePO4 builds), each string needs its own BMS. The BMS units operate independently. Make sure your charge and discharge settings are identical across strings. The JK BMS units can be monitored simultaneously in the app.
