On 27 August 2026, a quiet bit of secondary legislation called SI 2026/848 comes into force, and it does something no UK government has allowed before: it makes it legal to plug a certified solar panel kit straight into your wall socket, no electrician required. Here is exactly what the law says, what you can and cannot do, and why August matters even if you have never thought about solar before.
The short version: what is actually happening
There are two pieces of regulation, and people mix them up constantly. Here is the timeline that actually matters.
15 April 2026: BS 7671 Amendment 4 comes into force. This update to the UK wiring regulations opens the hard-wired route. A CPS-registered electrician can now legally connect an 800W solar kit to your consumer unit. This route has been usable since April, and it is the only fully legal way to get balcony solar connected right now. Expect to pay roughly £150 to £300 for the electrician on top of the kit cost.
27 August 2026: SI 2026/848 comes into force. This is the one everyone is waiting for. It amends the rules that stop you from wiring a generator - including a solar panel - into a standard three-pin plug. From this date, a fully certified plug-in kit can legally go straight into a wall socket. No electrician. No consumer unit. Just plug it in.
The catch: as of early August 2026, no kit has actually been certified against the new specification yet. The government published an Interim Product Specification that manufacturers must test against, but the certification pipeline is still running. Kits may not hit shelves on day one. When they do, retailers including Currys, B&Q, Screwfix, and Amazon are all expected to stock them from around £400.
What counts as a plug-in microgenerator
The law uses the term "plug-in microgenerator", not "balcony solar" or "plug-in solar panel." Here is what that actually means under SI 2026/848.
A plug-in microgenerator is a complete, factory-assembled kit. You cannot buy a panel and an inverter separately and call it compliant. The whole thing - panel, micro-inverter, cable, and the approved plug - has to be sold as one tested product. The manufacturer must certify it against the government's Interim Product Specification before it can carry the compliance mark that makes the socket route legal.
The inverter output is capped at 800W AC. That is the hard limit measured at the socket, not at the panel. You can oversize the panels up to 2,000W to get better performance on cloudy days - the inverter clips output at 800W regardless, so extra panel wattage just means you hit the cap more often, not that you exceed it.

G98 notification: you still have to tell them
Even though you are not asking for permission, you do have to tell your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) that you have connected a generator to their network. This is a G98 notification. It is free, it is online, and it takes about ten minutes. You must submit it within 28 days of installation.
This trips people up because "no electrician needed" sounds like "no paperwork needed." It is not. The DNO uses these notifications to keep the grid stable. Skip it and you are technically non-compliant, which could matter if you ever need to make an insurance claim or sell the property.
Your DNO depends on where you live - it is UK Power Networks in London, Western Power Distribution in the Midlands and South West, and so on. Their websites all have a G98 form. You fill in the make and model of your certified kit, your address, and the install date. That is it.
No SEG payments for plug-in solar
Smart Export Guarantee payments require MCS certification and a dedicated generation meter. Plug-in solar kits are not MCS-certifiable under the current rules, and there is no mechanism to meter what a socket-connected kit exports separately from your household consumption.
The practical result: any power you generate but do not use flows back to the grid unrewarded. That makes self-consumption the whole game. Run your washing machine, dishwasher, or immersion heater when the sun is shining, because every kilowatt-hour you use yourself saves you 26.11p (the July 2026 price cap rate). Every kilowatt-hour you export saves you nothing.
A properly sized 800W setup in the UK generates roughly 600 to 900 kWh per year. If you can use 80% of that yourself, you save about £125 to £188 a year - a payback of roughly 2.5 to 5 years on a £400 to £750 kit, assuming electricity prices stay around the current level. That maths works even without SEG.
Renters and flats: what changes, what stays the same
Plug-in solar was designed for people who cannot put panels on a roof - renters, flat-dwellers, anyone without a south-facing pitched roof they own outright. The kit mounts on a balcony rail, a garden wall, or a ground stand. It does not penetrate the building. You can unplug it, pack it up, and take it with you when you move.
That said, the law does not override your tenancy agreement or your lease. You still need your landlord's permission to attach equipment to the building. In a leasehold flat, you may also need building management approval. The law makes the electrical connection legal - it does not grant you a right to modify the exterior of a building you do not own.
Weight is a practical concern that the legislation does not address. A standard 400-440W panel weighs about 20 to 22 kg. Two panels plus mounting rails can approach 50 kg. A timber balcony or a shed roof not designed for that load is a genuine safety risk. If you are mounting on anything other than a solid wall or purpose-built balcony rail, get a structural opinion first.
Fire safety: what the law excludes
SI 2026/848 explicitly excludes certain building types from the simplified plug-in route. If you live in a building with combustible cladding - the kind that has been the subject of fire safety reviews since Grenfell - you cannot use the socket connection route. The same applies to buildings with timber-framed balconies.
These exclusions are not about solar panel fire risk specifically. They reflect a broader government position that any electrical installation on or near combustible external materials requires professional assessment. If you are unsure whether your building has cladding concerns, check with your building management or freeholder before buying a kit.
What to do between now and 27 August
If you want plug-in solar on day one, here is the practical checklist.
- Wait for certified kits to appear. No kit has been certified yet. Retailers are expected to list compliant products as soon as the certification pipeline clears, but that may take weeks, not days, after 27 August. Look for the compliance mark that references the Interim Product Specification - if a listing does not mention it, assume it is not certified for the socket route.
- Check your outdoor socket situation. You need a weatherproof BS 1363 socket within reach of where the panels will live. The kit's cable cannot be extended with an ordinary extension lead. If you do not have a suitable outdoor socket, get one installed by an electrician before the kit arrives - that part still needs a professional.
- Get landlord or building management approval. Even if the law says the electrical connection is fine, mounting hardware to a building you do not own needs permission. Get it in writing.
